Lapse and Tech Fad Thoughts

Lapse is a new camera app that wants to be the next social media app that's "real" and "laid back," much like BeReal. It does this by not letting you see a picture until 1-3 hours after you take it, like a polaroid. Oooh wow how cool. Pfft

Lapse is another in a long line of tech fads that'll be dead by the end of the quarter. Social Media apps that try to be "real" or "laid back" while also trying to be the Next Social Media app is equalivent to saying "this statement is false." Because people who are sick of current social media aren't likely to download a new app. wtf? They're going to take a break or delete the apps. A new app is not the answer for that audience.

There will always be new social apps, but the next big one isn't going to pretend to be good for you (BlueSky) or masquerade as a way to "disconnect" from current social media platforms. The next big app isn't going to be an alternative to Instagram, because Instagram is already the big app.

If we somehow do see a new big platform, it will improve the way you connect with people, or be entertaining, or have some new, not thought of feature that changes the game. And I doubt that'll happen because if you haven't noticed, the tech world is egregiously shitty right now. Like, moreso than usual. These growth hacked jokes will come and go in the meanwhile.
