The Nerd Fashion Tierlist

I like nerdy stuff. This will not come as news to anyone that reads this post (I don't think!?). I even like nerd stuff enough to wear it on my body. But while I'm not exactly the most fashion-forward dude, I still want to rep nerd stuff without feeling like a walking advertisement.

It's not easy. Whilst there are many retailers ready to deck you out in nerd gear, it's not all going to make you the fashionista I know you're meant to be. Thus have I created this Nerd Fashion Tierlist, honed over the years and finally ready to be put on display:

The full list:

S Tier: Supergroupies
A Tier: Insert Coin, Torokami
B Tier: Fangamer
C Tier: The Yetee, Hot Topic
D Tier: GameStop

Read on for details.

S-Tier:

SuperGroupies

SuperGroupies is the cream of the crop. It's a place that gives you a beautiful piece of clothing that happens to be nerd-adjacent in some way. It hits all sorts of properties, from Games to Anime, and the quality matches the price, which is closer to something you'd see from a designer brand. I've never regretted a purchase - not that I'm buying from them often, lol (again see: that price).

A-Tier

Insert Coin

Insert Coin is baller. Their designs are super tasteful, and the clothing is durable as hell - I've got pieces that have lasted me since college at this point. They run a lot of licensed collabs of IP that I personally love - their Yakuza line has stolen from my wallet more times than I'd care to admit. The biggest con imo is that shipping can be rough if you're not in the UK, where the company's based.

Torokami Apparel

I recently picked up a Cardigan from Torokami and it absolutely SLAPS. It's comfy as hell. Beyond that, what I like about Torokami is that their stuff is nerd-adjacent, but not targeted towards any specific license, so you feel less like a corporate billboard. The only thing that prevents Torokami from being S-Tier is that most of their clothing is drop-based, and I personally am not a fan of that usually. SuperGroupies gets away with it because...I mean scroll up. Look at that Trigun jacket.

B-Tier

Fangamer

The place that made me realize that you could wear something beyond a logo of your favorite game on your chest (more on that later). I started getting clothes from Fangamer when I was 17 and it made me deeply happy to have something that my nerd friends would like and that felt good to put on my body. Your boy's been struggling with the disphoria for uh, probably longer than he's realized, but I think Fangamer really helped with that in a way. So it's S-Tier in my heart, but B-Tier on this list because it's sort of a coin-toss as far as how "INSERT PRODUCT HERE" their clothes can get. But they also have cool posters and water bottles and stuff, and it's relatively inexpensive and most stuff comes in a lot of different sizes. A solid choice.

C-Tier

The Yetee

Even more of a grab bag than Fangamer - literally, given how the website works. It usually feels just a little too unsubtle for me to want to pick up anything from them. But it does make up for that by being tied to some charity a lot of the time. So that's good! But yeah no I'm not wearing the Xenoblade harem shirt on my body, thanks Yetee.

Hot Topic

"Wouldn't this be D-Tier Mint?" you might ask. No! Hot Topic remains higher on the list because it was the first to ever do it. The whippersnappers might not realize now, but back in my day[1] the ability to rep your favorite nerd shit was significantly weaker. But Hot Topic had a Legend of Zelda t-shirt I got my mom to buy me at our local mall when I was 7 years old. Was it just the logo of the NES game that I didn't even play on my chest? Yes. But my teacher complimented it when I wore it to school the next day and I've literally been riding that high ever since, so. C-Tier it is, lmao.

D-Tier (F-Tier?)

GameStop

No + L + Ratio + Fuck Off GameStop.

That's it, thanks for reading this very silly post lol.

  1. I can't believe I can say this now. I'm going to become a husk ↩︎
